Canada - Cape Breton
Info: This awesome surf lodge in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia is looking for hard-working and outgoing individuals to help with all aspects of running their surf camp. Whilst they most need help with surf lessons and surf rentals they can also offer opportunities in marketing, website design, tourism culture and recreation, and/ or restoring the 130 year old surf house.
This is one of the last remaining places that you can find surf breaks all to yourself and enjoy nothing but nature. Within a short distance you can find beginner waves, intermediate waves and world class waves all offering different levels and a range of swell and wind direction options. During hurricane season our point breaks come alive.
Because surfing was only introduced to the people of the island 8 summers ago with our summer surf program the surfers here are very welcoming and happy to see other people that share their interest and love of surfing. Everyone has a lot of fun and good laughs. What's more, this is an area with a rich culture that is unique to anywhere else in the world. Celtic (Scottish), Acadian (French) and Micmaq (Native) cultures all live in the area and honour their tradition, music and languages still to this day.
Surf Interns will also enjoy working with the owner of the surf lodge as she is a very skilled surfer, surf instructor and surf competitor with over 9 years experience. Interns can learn a lot of valuable information and improve their surfing skills.
Requirements: Surfing experience is not required because they are willing to train if applicants are hard working and eager to learn. Any experience it is always a bonus though. They do get some surf students that speak only French or German so if they speak those languages it is an asset but not required.
They are also looking for people with skills for restoring old buildings as the surf house's original 130 year old wood floors, walls and ceilings all need work.
Provisions: They can provide accommodation - which may be anything from camping at beautiful surf beaches (equipment supplied) or living in the 130 year old surf house (just like they did 130 years ago) or they may be able to get them in the lifeguard house. Still waiting on details about the lifeguard house though. For summer 2010 they are not sure if they can pay Surf Interns extra cash too but for following summers this may be possible.
Availability: They start the surf lessons and surf rentals July 1st and go everyday until August 31st. So July and August is best. But if applicants would like a longer placement, there is prep to do before and after. They might be able to take someone mid June to mid September too.
